Papers of Labor Party leader Thomas Tunnecliffe. Includes press articles, leaflets, pamphlets, correspondence, examination certificates and photographs. Bulk of the collection is press cuttings, pamphlets and leaflets. A number of the press cuttings and pamphlets are in scrapbooks (4 vols.). Cuttings concern Tunnecliffe's career, and politics and social issues, plus articles by Tunnecliffe. The loose press cuttings are largely photographs and cartoons featuring Tunnecliffe. The original photographs are a portrait of a man, unidentified, undated; a portrait of a woman, unidentified, undated; and two copies of an Argus newspaper photo featuring Tunnecliffe as acting Premier with the admiral and officers of a Japanese war ship, May 1932.

Thomas Tunnecliffe (1869-1948) was born at Coghills Creek, Vic. In 1886 he joined his father's trade and opened a bootmakers' shop in North Melbourne. He became president and treasurer of the Victorian Operative Bootmakers' Union, president of the Knights of Labor, delegate to the International Socialist Congress in Sydney in 1888, member of the Victorian Socialists' League, treasurer and co-founder of the Victorian Labor Federation, and president of the Trades Hall Council and the Eight Hours' ...
